Often, when you do not know in the dog world and you want to buy a dog companion, you look for breeders specialized in the desired breed and youi choose a puppy love at first sight. However, you do not pay attention to the health or genetic problems that this puppy can have. Prognathism is one of them. This genetic defect is automatically transmitted from one generation to another, and can be the source of some minimal health problems.
In our article today, we will explain what a prognath dog is. We will then clarify the causes and consequences of this pathology. We will also show you which breeds are involved.
We wish you a good reading!
What is prognathism?
Prognathism is a defect in a dog’s jaw. This concern is of skeletal origin and is distinguished by a disorder in the length of the jaws. This anomaly is also called « jaw of pig ».
We distinguish two types of prognathism in dogs:
- Lower prognathism: In this case, the lower jaw is longer and well beyond the upper jaw. Dogs with this abnormality are sometimes referred to as « grouchy dogs ». Canines with a flattened face are more likely to have this defect.
- Superior Prognathism: This is the Inverse Case of Lower Prognathism. This time, it is the upper jaw that is longer and thus exceeds the lower jaw. In this case, we speak of « begu » dogs. This anomaly is more likely to affect a dog with an elongated head.
To conclude this part, a dog is prognathic when his two jaws are not aligned. This anomaly can affect all dog breeds. It can be detected from the birth of the dog very easily: Just move your finger between the jaws of the dog when his mouth is closed. If you get there, it’s because he’s prognathic.
If your dog is prognathic, it is recommended not to have it reproduced to end this tare. However, a teething defect of the dog can sometimes be confused with a rather light prognathism.
Causes of prognathism of a dog
The dog’s prognathism is a congenital and always genetic defect. For a dog to have this abnormality, it must have two recessive versions of the gene responsible for this problem in its genetic inheritance.
Indeed, if a dog has only one recessive gene brought by one of these parents, it is not prognathic but can transmit this anomaly to his descendants if he is coupled with another canine carrying a recessive gene. This explains the fact that parents who do not have the anomaly make prognathic puppies.
Nowadays, no DNA test has emerged to detect this serious problem.
The races concerned
Depending on the breed of dog, prognathism may be considered either a defect or a desirable feature.
Prognathism as a defect
Basically, prognathism in dogs is considered a genetic defect because of the resulting aesthetic damage. This worry can also cause breathing problems or difficulties to feed.
The essential consequence of this anomaly is that it represents an eliminatory defect that deprives purebred dogs of being confirmed.
All dog breeds can contract this anomaly. However, some of them are more likely to have it, such as: Beagle, Cairn Terrier, English Cocker Spaniel, Border Collie, Long-haired Pyrenean Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd Dog, Porcelain , the Irish Red Setter or the Yorkshire Terrier.
Prognathism as a desired characteristic
In some dog breeds, such as the Bulldog, prognathism is a desired and desired morphological trait. This is also the case for the other following breeds: the Boston Terrier, the French Bulldog and the Boxer.
For these breeds, the absence of prognathism causes the refusal of confirmation of purebred dog.
What if my dog is prognathic?
Unfortunately, there is no miracle, there is no effective treatment to improve or eliminate a prognathism. But often, fortunately, this anomaly influences only the dog’s appearance and does not affect his health.
However, it is strongly recommended not to breed a prognathic dog.
However, if you bought your dog from a breeder and he did not tell you anything at first, know that you can consider going back to see him if you later discover that your dog is prognath, to ask for a partial refund or a change of the animal. But, remember, prognathism is not a hidden vice, you could have seen it at the time of purchase.
