A dog who does not obey his master is a boring thing and can even be dangerous in some cases. In this article, we will suggest 10 steps to follow to train your dog.
First, think about how you want to train your puppy:
To do this, you need to ask yourself the questions below:
In which place will he spend the night?
Are we going to allow him to sit on the chair or in the bed?
Can he go anywhere in the house?
Where will he eat? will he do it in the dining room with us?
To ask these kinds of questions is essential because it will allow you to decide what type of training and education you want to give to your pet.
However, be aware that a dog will understand everything you tell him the first time. For this, it is necessary to put in place the rules of cohabitation from the first day and to encourage him to respect them. Note: do not allow today something you banned yesterday and vice versa.
2. There is a need to agree on the type of training that needs to be consistent among all members of the family
The arrival of a new dog in the family will certainly make everyone happy. However, we must not forget that beyond this joy, this event also implies great responsibilities on the part of all.
We must therefore ensure that all the family has understood the rules of cohabitation that the dog must respect. It’s simpler that you all decide how to behave in order to avoid a situation in which the father, for example, forbids the dog from going into the living room and the son allows it. In this case, the dog will be lost and will not know what to do.
3. Train your dog in such a way that he recognizes his name fairly quickly.
This is an essential step in training a dog. It can be considered as the basis of everything. However, you must know that, to recognize his name, your dog will need 5 to 10 days.
We recommend a good method to follow to facilitate this step: call your dog by looking him in the eyes and give him a reward afterwards. Repeat the exercise when he has no more eye contact with you.
Note: If your dog does not obey you, stop the exercise, distract his attention for a moment and repeat.
4. Make sure your dog is comfortable with other dogs.
This step is essential because the socialization of a dog will allow him to have a correct and proper behavior with other dogs or human beings. We recommend that you take your puppy, from his first months of life, to several places to allow him to discover the outside world simply: people, cars, other dogs and animals, bicycles, etc. At first, your dog will be scared, but be quiet, he will become comfortable very quickly.
You have to follow these same steps to train an adult dog, but it will take a lot more patience.
5. Teach your dog how to bite.
Your dog must know how to communicate properly with the world around him.
As you already know, your pet interacts with you with his mouth. He must learn to use it well. Indeed, it is essential that you teach your dog before his 4 – 5 months the manner in which he must bite as this will become much more difficult thereafter.
How to do it?
Allow your dog to bite because he is developing his teeth, but he has to do it by using bite toys. However, sometimes put your hand between the toys and when it bites you very hard, stop it immediately and move away. Be careful not to hurt yourself.
6. How to train a puppy with positive reinforcement
In fact, training your dog will be much more effective if you use positive behaviors rather than avoiding negatives. Indeed, if you do not reward your dog when he does something good and you only scold him when he does something stupid, he will become demotivated very quickly. Show him clearly what is going well and what is wrong.
To reward your dog, use:
a treat: it’s an incredible reinforcement.
a caress: cuddle your dog, it makes him happy.
a compliment: if your dog obeys your order, tell him a sweet word.
We advise you to start your rewards with a treat and replace it with hugs and compliments after.
7. The education you give to your dog must be consistent
Never scold your companion when doing something good. For example, if you call him for several attempts and he does not come, do not scold him when he comes. Remember positive reinforcement: every time he comes, reward him.
8. Your dog must be able to remain alone without problem
Your dog must be able to manage his loneliness. Indeed, your companion is very sociable by nature. To remain alone for a long time makes him very quickly anxious and sad.
So when you bring your dog home, do not stay with him all the time. It is essential to leave him alone a little for him to get used to.
9. Organize short and easy training periods.
The training period should be a fun and enjoyable time for you and your dog. To ensure this, we advise you to arrange short training periods of about 15 minutes each.
Another important element is where the training takes place. We recommend that you continually change the training environment. As a result, your pet’s behavior will be more reliable.
10. Scold your dog in a proper way.
As we have already stated several times before, you need to use positive reinforcement to allow your dog to learn the right behaviors more quickly.
However, if you want your dog to stop doing something, just say « no » in a firm tone. He will understand very well what you want.
